The cross of Lorraine is the cardinal symbol of the province of Lorraine in France, which was lost in the Franco-Prussian War in the 1870s. One of the heartlands of the Art Nouveau movement, where the famed École de Nancy was located, Lorraine's patriotic symbol found its way into many Art Nouveau creations, in this case, in the signature of the maker.
