Philippe Wolfers "Night" Silver Enamel Vase

This Symbolist vase by Philippe Wolfers, entitled La Nuit (The Night), features a dynamically pierced silver mount of remarkable fluidity. The festooned upper section is animated by three stylized eagle owls in relief, their forms descending into three tall handles articulated with pierced, projecting elements. The tripod base is composed of vegetal volutes terminating in whip-like curves (coup de fouet). Embracing a pear-shaped body in enamel on red copper, the silver mount frames a nocturnal scene of red and black bats in flight, silhouetted against a chromatic night sky of pink, deep blue, and navy tones.

Philippe Wolfers' highly original and beautiful work was sought out even by Cartier, who purchased his snake bracelets for their clients demanding jewels in the Art Nouveau style. Cartier themselves did not create Art Nouveau jewels, but knew where the best were to be had.
