Daum Frères "Vigne et Escargots" Vase
This colorful Daum Nancy vase, entitled "Vigne et Escargots", depicts a lush grapevine animated by two hot-applied glass snails feasting upon its leaves. Acid-etched vines, foliage, and clusters of grapes unfold across a richly vitrified ground of amber, pink, red, plum, and white glass. Dots of applied colorless glass accent the grapes, lending dimensionality and a sense of movement to the cylindrical composition. Toward the base, layers of glass frit shift from yellow-orange to deep ultramarine, evoking the shadowed earth beneath the vine.

This elaborate vitrified and acid-etched vase captures a vineyard at the height of late summer, with ripe Merlot grapes suspended among translucent leaves and curling vines. Daum uses the material qualities of glass to evoke the changing light of sunset: layers of amber, rose, crimson, plum, and white appear to glow from within, while glass frit shifts from yellow-orange to deep ultramarine toward the base, suggesting the cool, shadowed earth beneath the vine. Applied droplets of colorless glass lend the grapes a tactile dimensionality, while a hot-applied glass snail nibbling at the foliage introduces a playful note of naturalism. Through vitrification, acid etching, and applied glass, Daum transforms light into an integral part of the composition, capturing the fleeting moment when the fiery glow of sunset shines through a late-summer vineyard.
