Émile Gallé Glass Bowl with Walnut Foot

$45,000

This whimsical glass bowl by Émile Gallé, featuring a multicolored pinched-sided glass bowl in yellow, purple, and green, is charming with its dimples and streaks of candy hues so imbued with seamless motion as though someone is actively swirling colors around the interior of the container. The glass bowl sits atop a carved walnut wood foot, with openwork floral design, and a scrolled base that similarly appears to be about to take flight, or perhaps is being compelled by the ripples of an unsettled tide.

The incredible sense of movement that this piece encapsulates speaks not only to the highly sophisticated abilities of the master glass maker who spun it, but also gives a clever nod to the very nature of glass itself, which is not technically classified as a solid material, and so is constantly in perpetual, if imperceptible, motion.
