This ballerina is a sclupture by François-Rupert Carabin in bronze. She is posed in the fifth position with the appropriate matching position of her arms in fifth en bas. The ballerina’s feet are in pointe shoes, and she is in a high relevé, meaning her weight is balanced on the tips of her toes. Her head is held upright by a straight neck that turns into a three-quarters profile. This dancer is the height of excellence, displaying mastery of ballet technique.

François-Rupert Carabin was a highly accomplished Art Nouveau artist working in many mediums as a photographer, metal-maker, ceramics designer, and cabinet maker. His bronze work, in particular, shares the theme of dancers, specifically ballerinas. This sculpture is a beautiful example of Carabin’s ability to capture the taste of the late 1800s romantic ballets, shown in the length and style of the dancer’s tutu.
