This 18K gold and diamond necklace designed by Paloma Picasso for Tiffany & Co. was created in 1980. It is designed as a torsade formed of multiple strands of box chain gathered by hemispherical spacers set with round brilliant-cut diamonds. This necklace of "generous scale" is one of the artist's earliest designs for the firm, a soft, tactile, and wearable piece in her bold and playful style.

When Paloma Picasso was hired by Tiffany & Co. in 1980, she joined group of strong, competitive designers who had well-established personal styles - Jean Schlumberger, who had reigned at Tiffany since the 1950s as having successfully revived Tiffany's distinctive, opulent style in a modernist mode; Elsa Peretti, a stylish minimalist with a sleek aesthetic; and Angela Cummings, whose streamlined naturalism was unique in the group. Paloma herself sought to convey the Zeitgeist of 1980s New York with her graffiti-inspired motifs, vividly colored specimen stones, and smoothly contoured forms, which together created their talismanic appeal. In this appealing necklace, her special feeling for gold, developed during her time at the Greek jeweler Zolotas, is very evident.
