This cameo glass vase by Daum Nancy is decorated with orange hogweed flowers with carved green centers on green stems that climb part-way up the elongated neck. The top of the neck is decorated in mottled yellow, green and orange, reminiscent of the play of light in a shaded flower bed. Art Nouveau artists were drawn to the Berce des Prés (Hogweed) for its dual nature—both beautiful and toxic—embodying the essence of the femme fatale archetype. This vase, influenced by Asian bottle vases, features a slightly compressed globular body and a tall, slender cylindrical neck. Its color palette, a striking combination of vibrant green and orange, feels remarkably modern.

Daum Nancy, like many other of the Nancy based masters, incorporates the Croix de Lorraine, or “Cross of Lorraine,” as part of their signature as a display of regional patriotism. The region was seized in the 1870s during the Franco-Prussian war by Germany, at which point great displays of regional French patriotism began appearing in local artwork of many varieties.
