Daum’s "Paysage d’été" vase captures the willow tree in the fullness of summer, its pollarded branches bursting into dense green foliage. Silhouetted against a vivid red-orange sunset, the willows evoke both vitality and tradition. Before the Industrial Revolution (c. 1750–1850), pollarding—severe pruning to promote new growth—was commonly practiced, particularly with willows. The resulting shoots were harvested for use in basketry, fencing, and as fodder for livestock. Set on the edge of a village, Paysage d’été presents a tranquil scene where a row of trees frames distant rooftops and a church steeple, evoking the quiet rhythms of rural life.

Daum employed the cameo glass technique—one of the most intricate and expensive methods of glass decoration, with origins dating back to ancient Rome in the 1st century B.C. The technique was later refined by Islamic and Chinese artisans in the 17th century, and revived in 19th-century England. Cameo glass is made by layering differently colored glass and then carefully carving away the outer layers to leave the design in relief against a contrasting background. Subtle shading is achieved by thinning the carved layer, while highlights are created where the glass remains thickest.
