Émile Gallé Poppy Pedestal

This pedestal by Émile Gallé showcases marquetry depicting the floral heads and fruits of the coquelicot (poppy). Gallé had a deep appreciation for the bloom, cultivating it in abundance in his garden at 27 Avenue de la Garenne. With its striking aesthetic and narcotic properties, the poppy was a favored motif among Art Nouveau artists. However, to farmers, it was a troublesome weed that needed to be eradicated. Before wheat fields were harvested, poppies were painstakingly hand-pulled to prevent their seeds from spreading and complicating future harvests. The pedestal’s sides are inspired by the Gothic trefoil arch, a form widely used in Christian Gothic architecture for portals and decorative elements due to its symbolic significance. For the pedestal’s framework, Gallé drew inspiration from the Umbellifer family of plants (ombelles), which he first incorporated into furniture design in 1894. Among his favorite species was La Berce des Prés (Giant Hogweed), a highly poisonous plant that could grow up to 18 feet tall, spreading rapidly across farmers’ fields and along the riverbanks of Nancy. With its dual nature—both beautiful and toxic—the Umbellifer family resonated deeply with Art Nouveau artists, embodying the femme fatale archetype. Though technically classified as weeds, Umbellifers were revered and prominently featured in many masterpieces of the period. The cabinet in the base of the pedestal has a white marble interior, suitable for the storage of sculpture.
