Louis Chalon "Pirouetting Femme-Fleur" Gilt Bronze Tray

$55,000

This French Art Nouveau gilt bronze tray features a sculpted "femme fleur" by Louis Chalon, aptly titled "Pirouetting Femme-Fleur." The female nude in the center of the tray stands joyously upon a rosebud, with arms raised high above her head in delight, as a supporting, stylized vine creeps up her leg and around her back. The tray is rendered so, that it appears as if she is emerging from a pool of rippling, liquid gold bordered by a shallow field of minutely detailed delicate blooms.

Art Nouveau masters like Louis Chalon often used the female nude as representation, a visual metaphor, for a natural form or phenomenon. In this case, we can imagine the young woman representing the rosebud itself, and the joy of it unfurling for the first time to meet the sun's rays.
