Tiffany Studios New York "Aquamarine" Glass Vase

$125,000

This monumental Tiffany Studios New York glass "Aquamarine" vase features iridescent yellow, blue, and brown marsh marigolds against an equally iridescent aquamarine ground. While the marsh marigold motif was previously used in Louis Comfort Tiffany's Metalwork and Enameling Department, what distinguished his "Aquamarine" vases was the decision to view an above-ground flower through the lens of water, an effect achieved only through intense, innovative, and revolutionary experimentation in the field of glass.

Louis Comfort Tiffany frequently vacationed in the Bahamas. Inspired by the island's lush marine and aquatic life, Tiffany sent one of his gaffers to tour the island in a glass-bottomed boat, and then encased his designs in thick layers of green glass to emulate the intimate view of the glass-bottomed boat. The complex process of internal decoration meant few vases survived the vase's cooling stage, and the artistic value and technical difficult of the vases made them one of the priciest in Tiffany's collections.
