Tiffany Studios New York Pair of “Saxifrage” Candlesticks
A pair of Tiffany Studios New York patinated bronze “Saxifrage” candlesticks. Tiffany drew artistic inspiration from the humblest species of meadow plants, such as the "Saxifrage" an herb which grows in the clefts of rocks. Here, the plant’s seed pods have been fashioned with great delicacy into a candle bobeche supported by a slender stalk rising from a symmetrical band of leaves that fan out to form the foot.

Louis Comfort Tiffany cultivated extensive clusters of saxifrage along the drive just inside the gates. He championed the cultivation of indigenous flora, recognizing and enhancing their frequently overlooked allure. With a profound passion for botany, he meticulously integrated the basal rosette leaves of plants into decorative motifs. This particular candlestick design represents one of Tiffany's most exceptional and sought-after creations, with a comparable piece housed in the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art.
